Compassionate Friends candle lighting is Dec. 9

When a child has died, the holidays can be an extremely difficult time for the family.

While others are enjoying celebrations and holiday good cheer, bereaved families find themselves simply trying to figure out how they can survive what, for many, used to be such a special time of the year.

Bereaved families now have one special day when they can join together to remember all children around the world who have died, regardless of age or cause of death.

The second Sunday in December (Dec. 9) is The Compassionate Friends (TCF) Worldwide Candle Lighting, and the Windom area chapter of TCF will again participate in the remembrance. The Windom service will be one of more than 500 formal services planned for Dec. 9 throughout the country and around the world.

The program, which begins at 7 p.m., will be held among the Festival of Trees in the Remick Gallery at the Cottonwood County Historical Society in Windom. Families and loved ones who have suffered the death of a child of any age - pre-born to adult - are invited to attend.

"It is a special opportunity to honor the memory of the child who has died and the love we shared with them in the support and company of others who truly understand," explains Carol Hartman, a member of the Windom area chapter.

The program will be very similar to those held in past years with special music and messages of tribute and comfort. Each person attending will be invited to light a candle for their special child (or children). Families may also bring photos, tributes or special mementos of their child to share as they choose.

While the actual candle lighting ceremony begins at 7 p.m., families are encouraged to come between 6:30 and 7 p.m., to decorate a Christmas tree ornament in memory of their child. A small photo (2x2 inches) of their child can be placed on the ornament. Other supplies for the ornament will be provided.

Families can also bring an ornament of their own to add to the Compassionate Friends tree.

Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

For more information on the Windom ceremony, contact Hartman at 831-4235.
