BREAKING NEWS: Workers escape injuries at fertilizer plant explosion

A sulfur explosion at the Country Pride Services Cooperative fertilizer plant in Bingham Lake resulted in some tense moments, but no injuries, according to Windom Fire Chief Dan Ortmann.

Windom firefighters were called to the scene shortly before noon today. Ortmann told Citizen Online the fire was likley caused by a hot bearing on one of the belt relays.

Firefighters were able to empty the building of sulfur, which played a key role in the event.

"It was depleted of oxygen and once the sulfur was emptied out, there was nothing left to burn," Ortmann said. "We were on the scene for about 45 minutes."
