Cardinals hold off late Eagle rally

RV 0-3-2 = 5
Windom Area 1-0-3 = 4

The Windom Area boys hockey team mounted a furious third-period rally Thursday but ran out of time in a 5-4 loss to Redwood Valley at the Windom Arena.

Windom got on the board first when Kyle Espenson scored late in the first period. The Cardinals scored five straight goals in the second and early third periods, taking a 5-1 lead before the Eagles mounted a comeback.

Eli Becker pulled the Eagles to within 5-2 4:28 into the third period. Then, at the 7:42 mark, Austin Fredin redirected a shot from Mikal Anderson into the net. And with 2:24 left in the game, Espenson netted his second goal of the game. The Eagles pulled their goalie for the final two minutes but were unable to score the tying goal.

Windom outshot Redwood Valley 33-27 in the game. Eagle goalie Josiah Quintero finished with 22 saves.
