Mt. Lake Knowlege Bowl earns state berth

There was good news for one of Mt. Lake's two Knowledge Bowl teams at Thursday's Region 8 meet at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

However, Windom's two teams and Red Rock Central's lone representative were on the outside looking in when it came to securing berths in the State Knowledge Bowl Tournament next month.

Mt. Lake's team of Christian Pfeiffer, Aron Harder, Daniel Harder, Hamlet Tanyavong, Caleb Rempel and Sam Xayanourom followed up last week's second-place finish in Sub-Region 6 with another second-place finish in Region 8. The team finished with 103 points and will join first-place Worthington 1 (113 points) and third-place Murray County Central 1 (94 points) at next month's State Knowledge Bowl meet at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd.

The Mt. Lake team was second after the written round and began oral round competition in Room 1. The team remained in Room 1 throughout the four oral rounds of competition and also remained in second place in those rounds.

Windom 1, meanwhile, finished sixth with 81 points while Windom 2 finished tied for 23rd with Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Marshall 2.

Windom 1, of comprised seniors Abby Resch, Ryan Helmoski, Nicholas Wolter and junior Isaac Steele, was 15th after the written round, but bounced back with an 18-point first oral round to move into sixth place. The team dropped to ninth after rounds 2 and 3, but ralled to finish in sixth.

Windom 2, comprised of senior JaDee Janssen, juniors Blake Warner and Max Sykora and freshmen Spencer Wolter and Katie Kelly, was 13th after the written round, fell to as low as 25th before finishing 23rd. The team's best oral round came in the second when they scored nine points and climbed to 16th.

Mt. Lake 2 finished in a tie for ninth place with 75.5 points.
