2/18/2013 9:27:00 PM BREAKING: Highway 71 closed north of Windom
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed Highway 71 north of Windom to all traffic due to whiteout conditions.
Strong winds in the region Monday night are causing blowing and drifting snow. While the immediate Windom area did not have as much snowfall as other parts of the region during the most-recent winter storm, areas to the north, particularly north of the Buffalo Ridge area, received significantly more snowfall.
That snowfall is blowing, creating ground blizzard conditions.
According to the MnDOT 511 Road Conditions website, Highway 71 was closed going north of Windom around 9:15 p.m. Monday night, and is closed from Windom all the way north to State Highway 7, just south of the Willmar area.
State Highway 19 is also closed from Redwood County Road 30 east to Minnesota State Highway 4, and U.S. Highway 212 is closed from Renville County Road 6 to State Highway 4.
Travel is not being advised in Cottonwood County until the winds die down, which is expected to be later tonight.
Two high school girls basketball games were being played in the area Monday night. Law enforcement stopped by the gyms in both Westbrook and Jeffers, advising those in attendance to not attempt traveling for at least an hour, when winds were expected to calm enough to potentially allow travel.
