EDA Executive explains Windom welcome sign location

Feedback about the three new Windom welcome signs along area highways has been positive, but there has been one nagging question.

Folks want to know why the sign along Highway 60 northeast of town sits a good 75 yards from the highway. The reason has to do with the Highway 60 four-lane expansion, according to Aaron Backman, executive director of the Windom Economic Development Authority.

Two additional lanes are expected to be built between the sign and the existing two lanes in 2017. Those lanes will be paved in 2018.

Backman said a holding pond will be built behind the sign, offering an impressive backdrop. Until then, the sign will continue to look just a bit out of place.
