Redwood Valley 1-1-0 = 2 Windom Area 1-3-4 = 8 The Windom Area boys hockey team showed its balance Thursday night, scoring seven unanswered goals in the final two periods to claim an 8-2 win over Redwood Valley at the Windom Arena.
Seven different Eagles accounted for the eight goals in the game. After a shaky start in the first period, the Eagles wound up outshooting the Cardinals 34-10 over the final two periods of play for a 46-23 edge in shots for the game.
Windom started the scoring early in the first period when a slap shot by Tyler Presthus deflected off a defender's skate into the net for his first goal of the season. Redwood answered late in the period, then took a 2-1 lead with Hunter Breidenbach scoring both Cardinal goals.
But Windom revved up the offense the rest of the way. A goal by Zach Bartosh tied the game at 2-2. The Eagles then got a goal from Mitchell Macek at the 12:53 mark of the second and took a 4-2 lead on a goal by Travis Janssen with 56 seconds left in the period.
The Eagles then expanded the lead in the third. Eric Haberman netted his first goal of the season, with Kyle Luhmann scoring on a slap shot less than a minute later. Freshman Devin Nielsen then netted a pair of goals 32 seconds apart to cap the scoring.
Ben Stubbe finished with 21 saves in the victory.
