Eagle girls snap 34-game losing streak

Worthington 1-0-1 = 2
Windom Area 0-2-3 = 5

The curse is over for the Windom Area girls hockey team.

The Eagles snapped a 34-game losing streak Thursday night, claiming a 5-2 victory over Worthington at the Windom Arena.

The losing streak dated back to Jan. 6, 2011, when the Eagles defeated Redwood Valley 5-4 after beating Worthington 6-0 three days earlier. The two wins were the only wins for the Eagles in the 2010-11 season. The Eagles lost their final 10 games of the 2010-11 season, went 0-20 in 2011-12 and started the 2012-13 season 0-4.

Thursday, Windom trailed for much of the first two periods. Worthington took a 1-0 lead at the 9:51 mark of the first period on a goal by Betsy Thompson. The lead held until the 13:43 mark of the second.

That's when Kaylee Rosenkranz found herself camped out in front of the net to knock in a rebound for a power play goal, tying the game at 1-1. Then, with 26 seconds left in the second, the Eagles took the lead when Addison Beaty beat Trojan goalie Amanda Bristow for a 2-1 Eagle lead.

Windom quickly pushed the lead to start the third period. Beaty scored on a wraparound play 34 seconds into the third. Then, just eight seconds later, Rosenkranz fired from the blue line through the leg pads of Bristow for a 4-1 lead.

Worthington trimmed the deficit to 4-2 at the 4:11 mark of the third on Thompson's second goal of the game, but the Eagles iced the victory one minute later when Kaylee Janssen scored on a breakaway for her first varsity career goal.

Windom outshot the Trojans 30-27 in the game. Seventh-grade goalie Emily Steen recorded her first career victory in net, stopping 25 shots.
