Eagle boys fall to Cardinals in opener
Chargers open with win
WWG 35-34 = 69
Wabasso 30-35 = 65

Westbrook-Walnut Grove opened the 2012-13 season in strong fashion Saturday night, grabbing a commanding lead late and hanging on to defeat Wabasso 69-65 at Wabasso.

The Chargers were red hot from long range, draining nine three-pointers in the contest from five different players.

Taylor Lindaman led the way with 16 points. Shane Buchmann added 15 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Hass scored 10 and Reed Bakken had eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Springfield 33-30 = 63
RRC 22-28 = 50

Red Rock Central dug itself a hole it couldn't get out of in Friday's season-opener as the Falcons took a 63-50 loss to Springfield at Lamberton.

The Tigers jumped to an 11-point halftime lead as RRC struggled with consistency from the field and turnovers.

Jeff DeCock led RRC with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Henry Rogotzke added nine points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Maison Miller added eight points.

Fairmont 33-37 = 70
Windom 27-33 = 60

The Windom Eagle boys basketball team opened the season with a strong effort but came up just short Saturday night, falling 70-60 to one of the sub-section favorites, Fairmont, at Windom.

The Eagles trailed by six at halftime but battled to take a one-point lead with nine minutes to go. Fairmont regained the lead but Windom clawed back, making the score 62-60 with 47 seconds to go, with Windom having the ball and a chance to tie or take the lead.

But a turnover on an inbounds pass, a string of free throws and a late basket helped the Cardinals go on an 8-0 run to close the game for the win.

Andy Pfeffer led the Eagles with a career-high 21 points. Collin Lovell added 17 points, 12 in the second half, and Nathan Remmers chipped in a career-best 12 points.
