Walkers to hit streets Saturday for Breast Health Fund Walk

The streets of Windom will be filled with walkers Saturday morning for the second annual "Breast Health Fund Walk."

But unlike last year's first event, the focus of which was raising money to help Windom Area Hospital purchase a digital mammography unit, the 2012 Walk is more of a celebration, says one of the organizers, Tyann Marcy.

"This year is about celebration," Marcy says, noting that her mother, Tammy Hall, who is the other chief architect of this Walk, is nearing completion of her second year as a breast cancer survivor. "We're celebrating getting the digital mammogram for Windom Area Hospital and celebrating breast cancer survivors in our area. We hope that this year people come out and celebrate with us.

"I am working on a couple of things for survivors of breast cancer this year. I really want this year to be about them. They are why so many people come out to support this cause."

Saturday's event begins at 9 a.m., with registration in the Blue Gym Lobby at Windom Area Middle High School.
Walkers also will be given route instructions, breast cancer survivors will be recognized and Marcy and Hall will address walkers.

The walk - walkers may choose a one-mile walk or a three-mile walk - begins at 10 a.m., from the high school.

Following the walk, walkers are invited to Jack Slade's Steakhouse for lunch starting at 11 a.m. Hy-Vee and Hardee's are assisting with the lunch.

Tyann and Tammy will announce the amount raised at about 11:45 a.m., at Jack Slade's, recognize businesses and special people connected with the walk and then start the drawings at noon.

For more details on the Walk and events connected to the Walk, see the story that begins on page 6 of the Oct. 10 edition of the Cottonwood County Citizen on newsstands today.
