Windom Girl Scouts plan Saturday clean-up project

The Windom Girl Scouts will hold their final centennial event Saturday when they work together to improve the local watershed.

About 50 Girl Scouts, their families, friends and adult volunteers in Windom have a full day of activities planned. They will rake leaves and grass from storm drain surfaces and public areas, distribute door hangers in neighborhoods to raise awareness and mark storm drains with an "Only Rain Down the Storm Drain" message.

In Windom, Girl Scouts will distribute door hangers and mark storm drains before meeting at Dynamite Park at 10 a.m. to rake leaves. Then they will divide into groups and pick up trash in parks and other areas of town.

The day wraps up with a noon hot dog meal back at Dynamite Park.

The Windom troop is taking part in a clean-up project that's taking place in all 49 counties of the Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys Council. The "Centennial Day of Service 2012 Take Action Project" is designed to remove 20,000 pounds of phosphorus, prevent 10 million pounds of algae growth and save $6 million in clean-up costs through a one-day effort.

Any community member or organization interested in helping the local Girl Scouts with their clean-up efforts should contact Mary Mohlencamp at 831-2644. Or, any interested individuals are welcome to come out to Dynamite Park on Saturday at 10 a.m. to register, receive garbage bages and then return for the noon meal.
